In dance, Events, Music, People, places on August 11, 2010 at 12:51 pm*Yelp!, Willie Mae Rock Camp & Beyond Race Magazine will be at The Stoop #onthestoop*
Brooklyn, NY. Stoops are known for being a common meeting ground for people to share stories and relax. With this in mind, F.O.K.U.S. designed The Stoop, its annual summer arts event, to serve as the artistic physical crossroads between individuals, communities and their respective artistic experiences. F.O.K.U.S. will produce the third annual event- The Stoop – in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn, NY on August 14, 2010 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m (rain or shine). The event is sponsored by New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, New York State Council on the Arts, Brooklyn Arts Council, Fusicology, NY Kings, Fresh Industries, Ogo Sports, Yelp and riceworks. The Stoop 2010 is hosted by Circa ’95 with music by DJ Synapse.
The Stoop is a free outdoor community gathering to celebrate the arts and healthy living. Last year we brought you The Astronomical Kid, Keys N Krates, Gist and many others. We continue to bring good music as this year will feature performances by artists of various genres (alternative, R&B, rap, poetry, gypsy rock) and promises to be a fantastic and unique addition to NY’s roster of summer events. The exciting and unique line-up includes: Si*Se, Pattern Is Movement, Kagero, Ayodele Alli, and Ishmael Islam. There will also be live visual art, face painting, and an array of fun games for the entire family. Invited visual artists include John Wright / Convoluted Construct, Alice Mizrachi and Free5. We will also have StoryCorps, The Icla da Silva Foundation, Yelp!, Black Teen Empowerment Movement, Circa ’95, Soh Nup Industries, LIFEbeat, Black Girls Rock, Willie Mae Rock Camp, Beyond Race Magazine and other organizations at the event for you to interact and learn about their unique opportunities. **About the recent additions**
Yelp is an online urban city guide that helps people find cool places to eat, shop, drink, relax and play, based on the informed opinions of an active community of locals in the know. Its the fun and easy way to find, review and talk about what’s great‚ and not so great‚ in your world.
Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is a non-profit music and mentoring program that empowers girls and women through music education and activities that foster self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
Beyond Race Magazine is determined to shed light on the amazing aspects of culture that are all too often overlooked by mainstream media, in order that they not be forgotten. BRM is a movement to change the way people think by reminding them of all the exceptional people that exist who are living their dreams and adding to the greater good of our society.
In both the location and event programming for The Stoop, F.O.K.U.S. hopes to reflect and promote the cultural diversity found throughout New York City. We want to provide a stage for a range of artists to display their talents to a larger community, while also creating an informal environment for surrounding community members to interact with each other. F.O.K.U.S. mission is to use the arts to create diverse communities; as a tool of community and self-empowerment, and to highlight the power of the arts and the impact that arts exposure has on our daily lives. We will continue this diversity in the performers, audiences and overall feel of The Stoop on August 14, 2010. In Events, Music, People, places on August 4, 2010 at 12:47 pmJoin Hudson Hotel next Monday and Rock the Hall @ Hudson Hall (think cafeteria meets beer garden cum coolest space ever!) with Free Pizza, Jack and coke drink specials and great music!! See you there!
Hudson Hall is a casual and stylish drinking and dining destination in New York’s iconic Hudson Hotel. Located in the space previously occupied by Hudson Cafeteria, Hudson Hall’s playful interiors, designed by Studio Arne Quinze, in collaboration with Morgans’ design team, are reminiscent of an Ivy League mess hall with long, wooden communal tables with rustic black finish, contrasting with red brick walls. Inspired by the atmosphere of a New England campus, Hudson Hall is a modern, collegiate mess hall that allows guests to craft their meal, through the selection of small plates created from premium sustainable-organic products, indigenous to the New York-Hudson Valley area. Dishes will highlight a diverse melting pot of cultural references derived from relationships built with boutique farmers and immigrant growers who are providing unique products and ingredients that are seasonal in nature.
