Gawker makes me LOL with Twilight v. Apple fanatics!

In Events, Movies, People on June 24, 2010 at 4:56 pm

This totally got me giggling and LOL-ing : I can’t do justice to the unbelievably funny and observant comparisons – check it out for yourself!!

PS. I’m team Jacob 😀

Like sitting out in the sun today for a new iPhone might have waited hours or overnight. They are wimps. Twilight fans have been camped out since Monday for tonight’s premiere. They will show you how it’s done!

The people waiting out for an iPhone bring chairs and maybe a snack or two, but they have nothing on the shantytown that has sprung up in front of the Nokia Theater this week. They’re all waiting for tonight when Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, and a bunch of girls we don’t care about will descend for the premiere of Twilight: Some Kind of Sequel. These fanatics are doing the long-wait in style. Seriously they are teenage girls and they are schooling the tech geeks who should be well-versed in how to stand on the sidewalk for countless hours waiting for an event they think will change their lives (but probably won’t).

Here are all the lessons the Apple Addicts can learn from the Twihards before the next product launch.

New York Asian Film Festival 2010 starts Friday 6.25-7.8

In Events, Movies, places on June 24, 2010 at 4:38 pm

from subwaycinema.com:

Check Out The NYAFF 2010 Film Lineup

The New York Asian Film Festival 2010 is here!

June 25 – July 8

Like Vandals storming the gates of Rome, the New York Asian Film Festival rampages through the Film Society’s Walter Reade Theater June 25 – July 8, unleashing an orgy of the latest and greatest pop masterpieces Asian cinema has to offer. For nine years, the NYAFF has been North America’s leading festival of popular Asian cinema but now it’s teamed up with the Film Society of Lincoln Center to also become North America’s fanciest!
.
America’s art-house theaters normally show an anemic sliver of what Asian cinema has to offer but the NYAFF’s 2010 line-up is a brawny slab of 35 blockbusters and break-out hits that audiences in Thailand, China, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan actually buy tickets to watch.

THE STAR ASIA AWARDS

.

The NYAFF will be presenting three Star Asia Awards to actors Western audiences should know more about. The ceremony will take place on opening night, June 25, and the recipients will all be at the festival to receive their awards.
.

Rising Star of Asia Award to Huang Bo

.

huangbo

.

One of China’s most popular new actors, Huang Bo got his break in Ning Hao’s 2006 comedy, CRAZY STONE, and he’s gone on to specialize in earthy, foul-mouthed characters. A leading man with a character actor’s face, he won a Golden Horse for his performance in COW, and we’ll be screening it as part of the NYAFF 2010, as well as his movie CRAZY RACER.

.

Star Asia Award to Simon Yam

.

simonyam1

.

Starting as a character actor in the 1970’s, Simon Yam has gone on to become one of Hong Kong’s favorite leading men, winning “Best Actor” at the 2010 Hong Kong Film Awards for his performance in ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW, an official selection of this year’s New York Asian Film Festival. From his performance as the insane fashion plate, Judge, in Ringo Lam’s FULL CONTACT to his turn as the dapper pickpocket, Kei, in Johnnie To’s SPARROW, Simon Yam has been one of the world’s best, and most debonair, actors. In this year’s festival, he appears in ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW, STORM WARRIORS and BODYGUARDS & ASSASSINS.
.

Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award to Sammo Hung

.

sammohung

.

A special Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award will go to the legendary actor and director, Sammo Hung, to honor his legacy of onscreen work. Jackie Chan’s “older brother” at Master Yu Jim Yuen’s Chinese Opera School, Sammo has worked as a producer, director, action-choreographer or stuntman in over 230 films. In this year’s NYAFF, Sammo Hung choreographed the action in IP MAN, he co-stars in the festival’s official opening night film, IP MAN 2, and he stars in the cracked action-cooking-comedy KUNG FU CHEFS. There will also be a special screening of his 1987 Vietnam War movie, EASTERN CONDORS, preceded by an onstage chat with the maestro about his career.
.

RETURN TO THE OLD SCHOOL: HONG KONG’S

NEW MARTIAL ARTS CINEMA

.
After 2009’s film, IP MAN, became a massive box office hit, savvy Hong Kong producers unleashed a wave of old school-inspired martial arts films that went back to basics: no CGI, no fancy wire work, no fakery. Instead, they were all about blazing hand-to-hand combat, hard-falling stuntmen and lightning fast kung fu. In conjunction with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, this year’s NYAFF features a special focus on Hong Kong’s new wave of old school kung fu.
.

littlebigsoldier

Jackie Chan’s in LITTLE BIG SOLDIER, his best

movie since DRUNKEN MASTER 2.

.

This year’s line-up will include Jackie Chan’s latest movie, LITTLE BIG SOLDIER; we’ll be screening GALLANTS, a rollicking action comedy starring a gallery of old school greats like Bruce Leung and Chen Kuan-tai; and two movies about Bruce Lee’s teacher and Chinese folk hero, Ip Man: an encore presentation of the original IP MAN and the North American Premiere of IP MAN 2, our official Opening Night Film.
.
We’ll also be screening the award-winning, 2009 Hong Kong blockbuster, BODYGUARDS & ASSASSINS; the insane cooking kung fu flick, KUNG FU CHEFS; and the totally mad throwback to visually bonkers Hong Kong comic books of the 70’s, THE STORM WARRIORS, and much more
.

UP FROM THE JAPANESE UNDERGROUND

.

Independent movies get a bad rap, but for the past two years some of the wildest Japanese films have been shot on video for about $1.95. Hip hop wannabes stranded in the middle-of-nowhere will be ripping up the screen in the award-winning 8000 MILES (about male rappers, dying on the vine) followed by a screening of the much-anticipated follow-up 8000 MILES 2 (about female rappers, languishing in obscurity). Director Yu Irie will be here for both screenings. We’ll also be screening two films from director Tetsuaki Matsue, who will also be attending the festival. First up is his Japanese/Korean personal odyssey porno documentary, ANNYONG YUMIKA, that’s a testament to the passions aroused by one Japanese skin flick actress working in Korea. Then we’re screening LIVE TAPE, one of the most ambitious concert films ever made and winner of “Best Japanese Film” at the Tokyo International Film Festival, starring Kenta Maeno, known as Japan’s Bob Dylan. Kenta Maeno is expected to attend the screenings.
.

8000miles

8000 MILES: these rappers only wanna break your heart.

.

We may be in a new location, but the NYAFF will still be as raw and potent as moonshine. Although we’re on the Upper West Side, we’re still showing movies that’ll mess you up and ruin you permanently for the pale, lifeless junk Hollywood has to offer.
.

Let us save you from the boring movies.

New World Stages hosts naked boys, Hitchcock and sexy Time out Lounge

In Events, places, theatre on June 24, 2010 at 11:01 am

The 39 StepsGazillion Bubble ShowAvenue Q

Naked Boys SingingThe Temperamentals

Walking north of Times Square, onto Hell’s kitchen, there sits a new theatre off Broadway – the New World Stages that is currently housing fun and creative shows like Hitchcock’s 39 steps, The Gazillion Bubble Show, Imaginocean, Naked Boys Singing, and Avenue Q. The entire venue is very chic, and so uber chic that Time Out set up a sexy lounge on the lower level. We were invited to an open house courtesy New World Stages to have drinks at the Time Out lounge (where we sampled Vessica and Mezzaluna vodka)  and got comp-ed orchestra seats to Hitchcock’s 39 steps. The venue itself can be rented out for private events and with the open spaces, and inviting surroundings. The TimeOut lounge also has various theme nights including a super fun karaoke night (which lulu absolutely loves!!)

ON to the show… we were graciously given tickets to 39 steps which was truly enjoyable!! The cast  basically consisted of 4 actors, the main actor with his constant role, but the 3 other actors assuming various roles throughout the performance and managed to do so seamlessly. The entire production and set was very simple but managed to convey (lots of Hitchcock puns) a more elaborate set with their creative use of the props. The story is one of intrigue,  spies and secrets – and to top it off, there’s the friendly staff going around taking orders for cocktails in the theater and cute guys selling candy and snacks throughout the theatre  (a little fyi:  you are allowed to drink alcohol in all the shows except for naked boys – probably a good idea – mixing nudity and alcohol might be a recipe for too much raunchiness!)

So, if you are game, drop by New World Stages on 50th Street between 8th and 9th avenue, and to get an even better deal, BroadwayBox.com is a community site that lists deals and steals for everyone to enjoy the theater!

Cheers!

Madonna and Lourdes bringing the 80’s back….in style!

In Fashion, People on June 24, 2010 at 8:37 am

being fashionistas and fruglistas, we all know that fashion goes in cycles –  we could totally raid our mom and grandma’s closet and find things that they wore years yonder and it wouldn’t be too hard to find something that fits into today’s fashion! Well, if the smell of mothballs is discouraging you from doing so, and you are a grew up with 80s fashion, someone, or should I say a power duo – Madonna and her daughter Lourdes – is trying to bring it back with a brand new fashion line for Macy’s. The line is set to launch on August 3rd, but the ad campaign is to debut the 29th of the month, and from the sketches, its reminiscent of Betsey Johnson and Madonna’s style in the 80s. Even though Madonna mentions that the sketches are all Lourdes, it really shows how her style has rubbed off on her daughter. At this time, there are only sketches out – but the look book should be out pretty soon….

NYLON + Puma Social Club = The Pretty Reckless

In dance, Events, Music, People on June 17, 2010 at 12:48 pm

Personally, I am not a fan of “jenny’s” emo behavior, her use of way too much eyeliner (reminds me of the Ellen commercial for AMEX with the raccoon) and the depressing songs ( my playlist is purely GLEE hits!) but NYLON and Pumacity think otherwise (and the bands many many fans!!) So, they are hosting a party at the Puma Social Club next Tuesday (hopefully there will not be a repeat of the Hanson+ Drake debacle!)  – DJ Josh Madden will be spinning the ill tunes – all you need to do is RSVP to pumacity@nylonmag.com by Monday 5pm and you are all set to emo out with the band too!

Ripped from Spin.com:

Taylor Momsen at Bamboozle / Photo by Kyle Dean Reinford
Taylor Momsen at Bamboozle / Photo by Kyle Dean Reinford

Like her overambitious and wayward onscreen persona Jenny Humphrey, Gossip Girl‘s sixteen-year-old star Taylor Momsen definitely has more than a bit of rock star in her.

The self-titled, four-track debut EP from her band the Pretty Reckless is now streaming on Billboard.com. The EP is officially out June 22. Listen now!

We reviewed their debut set at NYC club Annex last year, and also their appearance at Bamboozle in May. You’d think it’d be hard to take a pubescent actress in a teen drama about gossip bloggers and Upper East Side “queen bees” seriously as a musician, but the music is making it pretty hard not to.

Lead single “Make Me Wanna Die” is a snarly, Courtney Love-esque rock song, with some pretty hard guitar riffs. And “My Medicine” is an EP-standout, perfect parts pop and alt-rock.

“Hey there father, I don’t want to bother you, but I got a sin to confess,” she sings on “Goin’ Down.” “I’m just 16 if you know what I mean, do you mind if I take off my dress?” Well, you’re sixteen, so yes, to avoid a lawsuit, we would mind.
