NYLON + Puma Social Club = The Pretty Reckless

In dance, Events, Music, People on June 17, 2010 at 12:48 pm

Personally, I am not a fan of “jenny’s” emo behavior, her use of way too much eyeliner (reminds me of the Ellen commercial for AMEX with the raccoon) and the depressing songs ( my playlist is purely GLEE hits!) but NYLON and Pumacity think otherwise (and the bands many many fans!!) So, they are hosting a party at the Puma Social Club next Tuesday (hopefully there will not be a repeat of the Hanson+ Drake debacle!)  – DJ Josh Madden will be spinning the ill tunes – all you need to do is RSVP to pumacity@nylonmag.com by Monday 5pm and you are all set to emo out with the band too!

Like her overambitious and wayward onscreen persona Jenny Humphrey, Gossip Girl‘s sixteen-year-old star Taylor Momsen definitely has more than a bit of rock star in her.

The self-titled, four-track debut EP from her band the Pretty Reckless is now streaming on Billboard.com. The EP is officially out June 22. Listen now!

We reviewed their debut set at NYC club Annex last year, and also their appearance at Bamboozle in May. You’d think it’d be hard to take a pubescent actress in a teen drama about gossip bloggers and Upper East Side “queen bees” seriously as a musician, but the music is making it pretty hard not to.

Lead single “Make Me Wanna Die” is a snarly, Courtney Love-esque rock song, with some pretty hard guitar riffs. And “My Medicine” is an EP-standout, perfect parts pop and alt-rock.

“Hey there father, I don’t want to bother you, but I got a sin to confess,” she sings on “Goin’ Down.” “I’m just 16 if you know what I mean, do you mind if I take off my dress?” Well, you’re sixteen, so yes, to avoid a lawsuit, we would mind.

Malaysian Restaurant Week….. yummers!

In food, places on June 17, 2010 at 12:13 pm

We all love to eat, drink and reconnect with each other over food – so, what better way to do all of that at an amazing price ($20.10) and sampling exotic Malaysian food!! Chef and proprietor Zakary Pelaccio, of Fatty Crab and Fatty Cue in NYC is the spokesperson for Malaysian Restaurant Week and he ( and me!) recommend you get to some of the hottest places in NYC and feast on the flavors of Malaysia yourself – I’m gonna get to Le Colonial and Spice Market to see their offerings, besides the staple Nyonya in Chinatown!

Details below…

Malaysian Restaurant Week June 14-20, 2010

Colorful, exotic and full of enticing flavors, Malaysian cuisine is a fascinating blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian food traditions, with signature dishes that range from Indian breads like Roti Canai and the Chinese-inspired Char Kway Teow to the quintessentially Malay Beef Rendang.

Now you don’t have to travel 9,400 miles to try these exciting flavors. For one week only, enjoy a special Malaysian menu at participating restaurants in the New York metro area.
